Buying Guide

Calories

Fryums in their ready to fry condition, contain about 300 kcal to 400 kcal. But most of them need to be fried in oil, thus increasing the calorie value of this snack. You should note that they are light and crispy, and there is a high chance of overeating them, which directly increases the calorie intake plus causes indigestion.

Fat

The fryums in themselves, unless fried, contain less fat. 100 g contain less than 1 g of fat too. But the issue is, these are not ready to eat but ready to fry, which translates to deep-fried snack that takes on all the fat from the oil in which you fry it. If you are calorie conscious, a low calorie and low-fat variety that does not need to be fried can be an ideal option. (with no or just very little oil).

Gluten

To make papads, usually gram flour and sometimes wheat flour is used. Some manufacturers may use tapioca or other flours as required. But wheat contains gluten, and mostly the ones available in the market contain traces of gluten. For gluten-sensitive people, whether it is you or someone in your family, ensure you buy only the packs that mention “gluten-free”.

Food Dyes

Papads are delicious snacks, but to increase their appeal among consumers, especially kids, artificial food dyes are used. These dyes can cause adverse health effects, such as hyperactivity in children, cancer, and allergies. Try to abstain from buying the colorful fryums, unless the color is due to one of the natural ingredients used to make the fryums (like in beetroot and spinach papads).

Preservatives

Synthetic preservatives are added to most of the ready to fry papads. The natural and organic papads are the only ones that contain no chemicals. Also, some other good brands ensure not to add artificial preservatives to increase the shelf life of the product.
