Buying Guide

Cow’s Milk Cheese

All cheese is not made from cow’s milk. There are goat’s milk, sheep’s milk, and buffalo’s milk cheeses as well. Many manufacturers mix these cheeses to increase texture and flavor. Goat milk is low in casein, and the cheese made from it is soft and crumbles easily. Mixing goat’s cheese with cow’s cheese helps soften the texture a bit.

Also, to fortify the amount of vitamin A, goat’s cheese may be added as it contains more vitamin A than cow’s milk. But cow’s cheese has more calcium and protein. So if you are fastidious about the source of the cheese, only buy the ones that clearly state that the cheese is made with cow’s milk.

Fat

Cheese slices are full of fat. They even contain traces of trans fat. About 100 g of cheese will have 25 to 30 g of fat, which includes saturated fats. Saturated fats are not good for you, so consuming processed cheese regularly may not be a good idea.

As these contain trans fats, ensure that you read the nutritional value on the pack and pick the ones with less than 1% by weight of trans fat.

Emulsifiers and Preservatives

Most of the cheese slices that can be bought off the shelf are processed cheese varieties. All processed cheese contains emulsifiers and food coloring. Good processed cheese has 50% or more cheese, but none is completely 100% cheese.

So, what is added for the remaining 50%? Fillers that is, synthetic colors, emulsifiers, and other preservatives are added. These fillers enhance the color, texture, sometimes the flavor but mostly increase the shelf life of the cheese. None of these artificial fillers are good for you. Regularly enjoying a slice of cheese with your sandwiches does not just add to your protein but also harmful chemicals. Try to optimize the consumption of processed cheese as much as possible.
