Buying Guide

Stainless Steel or Aluminium

The material used to make the squeezers is mostly stainless steel or aluminium. Stainless steel is an alloy of nickel, magnesium, chromium copper and iron. It is the chromium coating that makes stainless steel corrosion-resistant and rust-free.

Aluminium is more corrosion resistant and not prone to rusting at all. However, stainless steel is more durable as it has more tensile strength, while aluminium is lightweight.

But remember that the pressure required to squeeze juice from lemon is very less and therefore the durability of squeezers will not vary much depending on the material used.

Stainless steel never reacts with citrus, but aluminium may etch with citric acid very slowly over a period of time. But even this is not too much of a concern as the acceptable amount of aluminium in our body is 40 mg per day per kg of body mass.

Handheld or Countertop

When it comes to lemon juicers, there are quite a few varieties available. Manual juicers can broadly be divided as handheld and countertop.

The handheld ones require you to press the handles together to squeeze the juice out of the lime placed in the cavity. It hardly requires much effort and pressure.

But the countertop ones require a little effort and pressure. The countertop ones ensure that every drop of juice is squeezed out, which is not entirely possible with the handheld ones.

There is a disadvantage to this too. If you squeeze too much, you may split or turn the fruit juice putrid with all that friction and slight heat generated because of all that grinding.

Again, what you will choose should be based on convenience.

Design and Style

The manual lemon squeezers need to have good depth to hold the sliced lemon and have an ergonomic design to prevent you from injury.

Also, not all juicers are appropriate for all shapes and sizes of citrus fruits. Some are small and only good for squeezing lemons, while others are meant for juicing sweet limes and oranges.

Some varieties can be used to extract juice from any variant of citrus fruits. Usually, these have some additional filters or adjust the size of the cavity as per your requirement.

It would be best if you chose a squeezer depending on your purpose.
