How LCD Monitors work

Different types of monitors work in different ways, for example, the CRT is called so because it has three different electron guns projecting images on the screen from behind. Hence they are really bulky and consume a lot of electricity.

Plasma Displays, on the other hand, use pixel’s just like the LCD, but that is where the similarity ends. Each pixel in a plasma display is an individual fluorescent lamp which is capable of emitting a range of colors. However, LCD’s use liquid crystals and polarized light to make the pixels glow. Here is how they do it.

A little more than a century ago, it was believed that only 3 states of matter existed, that is, solid, liquid and gas, but later, it was discovered that some matter also exists in a semi-liquid and semi-solid state called liquid crystals. They can show properties of solids, as well as those of liquids based on the surrounding environment. The bizarre thing about liquid crystals is that they are normally wavy in nature but become flat and straight when electricity is passed through them. This strange but unique property is what helped us, humans, to make LCD displays.

The other aspect of LCD is the polarized light. To polarize the natural light, a special type of lens is used. The natural light always has horizontal and vertical rays in it. By using a polarizing lens, the horizontal rays of the natural light is blocked out, reducing the intensity of light but not messing with the quality of light projected. Orientation also plays a major role. When placed at 90 degrees to the light, the lens won’t let in any light, however when placed at the opposite 90 degrees, it lets in all the light. Hence, By changing the orientation, a pixel in LCD can be turned on and off.

LCD panels these days use active matrix displays while the older ones use passive matrix displays. The active matrix displays have a significant advantage over the other type in terms of display quality, resolution, brightness, viewing angles etc but are also more expensive than the passive type. The difference in cost is significant due to the less number of transistors used in passive matrix displays. In the active type, each pixel has its own transistor, but that is not the case with passive matrix displays.

Pixels themselves are very tiny and number in the millions on an LCD Panel, but they themselves are made up of sub-pixels which are red, blue or green in color. The liquid crystals shine in a plethora of colors when polarized light is passed through them. These subpixels make the array of colors more vibrant. A pixel is placed between two polarizing glasses, both at 90 degrees. There is also the liquid crystal present which appears wavy or twisted when there is no current. When it is switched off, it rotates the incident light 90 degrees and allows it to pass through, but when it is on, it doesn’t allow the light.

When a pixel needs to be switched on for the screen to display an image, a bright light at the back of the setup lights up to illuminate the polarizing panel in front of it. The panel is a horizontal polarizer and lets’ only horizontal rays pass through. When the electricity is switched on, it goes to the pixel and not to the liquid crystal, which bends to its natural form, making the light also bend 90 degrees. The horizontal rays get turned into vertical rays. The next polarizing panel filters out any horizontal rays if any and the sub-pixels convert the rays into color.

Types Of LCD Panels
